One of the most common and widely used surgical methods of trying to treat Peyronie’s disease is through the use of tissue grafts in the penis. This is a different surgical method that is used by men who are unwilling to accept a loss of length in the penis that occurs when the Nesbit Procedure is carried out.
The grafting procedure involves the total removal of the plaque of scar tissue that develops on the penis and causes it to curve.
This straightens the penis and brings it back into its original shape. Typically, patients with large plaques of scar tissue and severely bent penises will be advised by Doctors to choose this surgical approach.
Once the material is removed from the penis, the affected part of the Tunica Albuginea is replaced with graft material from elsewhere.
In most cases, the tissue is replaced with material from the subject’s own body, known as autografted tissue. This prevents any allergic or immunological response from the body and stops rejection taking place.

In some cases, Surgeons opt to implant synthetic substances that are not reactive with the body. These can include GORE-TEX and Dacron – although when artificial compounds are used, they can often increase scarring and cause fibrosis when excess scar tissue forms.
Rarely, doctors will choose to implant xenografts in which tissue from cadavers or animals is grafted into place within the penis. These kinds of tissues are prone to rejection by the body, although in some cases, they do offer a good result.
Although many men who choose grafts do so to avoid the shortening effect of the Nesbit procedure, it is unfortunately the case that grafts will often undergo postoperative contraction, and this can actually cause some degree of shortening in the penis – as well as scarring. With any procedure there is a risk, and it is important to fully consider the advantages and disadvantages of all procedures prior to committing to surgery.
