Treatments of Peyronie's disease : the penile implants.

  Peyronie's disease and penile implants

For men suffering from severe Peyronie’s disease who have considered a range of other options without success, a penile implant is often the last resort.

A few years ago, implants were often provided by doctors for men that struggled to get an erection due to the condition, however nowadays, other techniques have been introduced, which have meant that implants are only used in the most severe cases of erectile dysfunction.

Penile implants are usually made in the form of a plastic cylinder, and can either be inflatable or solid. They are inserted into the Corpora Cavernosa during surgery. In order to minimize any immune response, the implants are made from a biocompatible material, and this can reduce scarring from the procedure.

Penile implants work in one of two ways, they are either placed inside the penis to correct the curvature by straightening it, or are used to bend the penis back against the plaque of scar tissue that forms in Peyronie’s disease, and this will often have a better effect in correcting the curvature of the penis successfully.

It is important to remember that surgery is invasive, and that it should be seen as a last resort rather than a first choice. Other approaches should be tried first, especially since surgery that is carried out too early in the progress of Peyronie’s disease has a much greater rate of failure due to the fact that the curvature can continue to develop. It is also vital to remember that once the surgery has been carried out, it is irreversible, and any scarring is permanent, so do consider all of your options before committing to it.
